Reflecting on Last Week 

• Coach Rob Odom spoke at the Methodist Men's Breakfast at Tunica Methodist Church on his journey to a state championship and what it means to the student athletes, parents, and community of West Feliciana.  From left to right: Pastor Mike Clark, Coach Rob Odom, and Deacon Carlyle Rogillio.

• Dr. Henry Hardy provided a tremendous history lesson on John S. Dawson in honor of Black History Month at Magnolia Full Gospel Baptist Church last Sunday morning.  Pastor Milton Coats also recognized honor roll students who attend Magnolia Full Gospel.

• The WFHS Football Field was selected for the prestigious Pioneer Athletic's 2017 Fields of Excellence Award!  A special thanks goes to Mr. Lee Hammer, our coaches, and so many others who look after our facilities.

• WFMS students, Cha'Darius Williams and Broderick Carmenia, use hands on learning to to determine how far away planets are from the earth.

• Students from Ms. Ewing's Kindergarten class assist Mrs. Lindsey in doing the announcements for Motivational Monday.  The students are Eli Dwyer, Aurora Spain, Aurora Luneau, Kinzee Richardson, and Jacolby Davis.

• Sarah White is extremely pleased with her AR Progress and is determined to reach her goal of being in the 100 point club.  

• I was very humbled and honored to be recognized as the 2018 Louisiana Superintendent of the Year by Daniel Domenech, AASA Executive Director, and Gail Pletnick, AASA President, at the national conference in Nashville, Tennessee on February 15.  Any recognition I receive is attributed to our employees, who are the best!

• Justin McFarland is a school safety patrol officer who does a wonderful job of patrolling the cafeteria each morning.

• Head Start is great start for our students!  Mr. Coleman joins Ma'Jour as he discusses details from the story they just read.

• Many years ago Head Start was referred to as Health Start to focus on the well being of children. In that tradition, Kyran and Marvin are practicing good dental hygiene.

• Carmette and Khloe create a house for all of their animals to live in.

• Carter Adams is super excited about his Valentine's box.

• Today our Kindergarten students celebrate hibernation day. They came with PJs, blankets, teddy bears, and flashlights.

• Bingo Night was a huge hit at Bains Lower last week!  The fundraiser will provide new playground equipment.

• Congratulations go to all of the students selected to the Jr. Beta Club at Bains Elementary!

Looking Ahead

• On March 24, we will have a parish-wide election on two ad valorem tax renewals.  Both renewals provide key revenue for our school system.  The renewals raise 7.4 million dollars in revenue, which is 25% of our annual budget.  The revenue funds a significant portion of the salaries and benefits of all employees (bus drivers, cafeteria, custodians, teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators).  Both renewals also support the cost of athletics, extracurricular activities, after school tutoring, busses, technology, maintenance, security, Pre-K, Head Start, and Early Head Start, etc.  Early voting begins on Saturday, March 10 and ends on Saturday, March 17.  The election date is Saturday, March 24.  In case you missed it, the recent news of additional funds coming from Entergy could generate additional funds for our district; however, this would only occur if the property millages are renewed. 

• West Feliciana Parish Schools will host My School Color Run on 03/03/18 at 8:00 AM. The My School Color Run is an untimed 5K fun run for all ages and fitness abilities. Along the route, participants pass through vibrant color zones, making it a "colorful experience." Additionally, each pre-registered participant is provided with a single powder color packet that will be thrown in the air at the final color celebration at the finish line. You can sign up for the run by visiting events.myschoolcolor.com and searching for your event or by completing a paper registration form. Business sponsorship opportunities are also available. Food for Thought

• This week was another good week for our school system!  There are so many things to be thankful for and I am so blessed to be a part of it each and every day.  West Feliciana is not perfect, but the grass is a little greener and the sun shines a little brighter here.  
• As we reflect on the tragedy in Florida, it humbles us and brings a sense of urgency to make sure that we keep our children safe.  In coordination with the sheriff's office, we have put many safety protocols and procedures in place.  We have improved each year but we also recognize that we must continue this work.  We also recognize with humility that the best defense is our best offense, which is relationships, trust, and communication.  Please let us know if you see a concern as we need that input and let's continue to work together to improve in all areas, which is the strength of West Feliciana.  #WeAreWestFel
