Looking Ahead

  • On February 1, the Louisiana A+ Board of Directors will conduct their quarterly meeting at Bains Lower, a Louisiana A+ School.  The directors from around our state will convene at Bains Lower to see the wonderful work of our staff and students during a tour of the school. A Louisiana A+ School provides research based instruction in every classroom using the arts and creativity as strategies to teach critical learning standards.  The foundation was created by George Rodrigue, the late artist, known for the famous Blue Dog.  For more information about Louisiana A+ Schools, please click here.

  • On March 24, we will have a parish-wide election on two ad valorem tax renewals.  Both renewals provide key revenue for our school system.  The renewals raise 7 million dollars in revenue, which is 25% of our annual budget.  The revenue funds a significant portion of the salaries and benefits of all employees (bus drivers, cafeteria, custodians, teachers, and administrators).  Both renewals also support the cost of athletics, extra curricular activities, after school tutoring, busses, technology, maintenance, security, Pre-K, Head Start, and Early Head Start, etc.  Early voting begins on Saturday, March 10 and ends on Saturday, March 17.  The election date is Saturday, March 24.
  • West Feliciana Parish Schools will host My School Color Run on 03/03/18 at 8:00 AM to raise money for their school. The My School Color Run is an untimed 5K fun run for all ages and fitness abilities. Along the route, participants pass through vibrant color zones, making it a "colorful experience." Additionally, each pre-registered participant is provided with a single powder color packet that will be thrown in the air at the final color celebration at the finish line. Participants that register by 02/16/18 will receive a t-shirt, race bib, and individual color packet. You can sign up for the run by visiting events.myschoolcolor.com and searching for your event or by completing a paper registration form. Business sponsorship opportunities are also available. Please contact the event organizer, Kati Williamson, for more information at 225-931-3506.

Food for Thought

  • It is no secret that one of the reasons that our schools have so much success is because of our parents and the support they provide to their children and the children of this community.  I am sad to say that we lost an exemplary parent this past week.  Mr. Russell Achord, deputy fire chief, was killed while working a wreck during the winter weather.  We will miss Russell and the public service he provided for our schools and parish, whether it be safety training or through his work as a first responder.  Russell was also a Boy Scout leader and indirectly impacted the school system in that role as he mentored and modeled the hard work and leadership that helps boys become leaders in our schools. Mr. Russell Achord exemplifed the spirit of a true servant and was a model for what it means to be a West Fel SAINT.
