To join REMIND for the Middle School Boys Cross Country team, text @wfelmsxc to 81010.

1st Day of Practice - Wednesday, August 14th (Middle school athletes can join at a later date.)

Practice Location - At the football stadium (and occasionally at the sports park). We run on the track and around the high school campus. They should change in the middle school gym. There are no lockers. Any valuables need to be given to the coach and can be locked in his vehicle.

Eligibility - Any 6th, 7th, & 8th grade boys. (Principal can veto based on academic problems)

Practice Begins - After school. Runners will walk to the stadium. They will cross the road in front of the school where a police officer will stop traffic for them.

Practice Ends - Practice will end at 4 pm for middle school runners. They must be picked up by 4:30 pm. An occasional late pickup will be okay, but too many will mean suspension from the team. Athletes must be picked up from the stadium, not at the middle school.

Practice Days - Practice will be 4 days a week. The off day changes according to the high school practice schedule. For the remainder of August, middle school will not practice on Mondays.

Medical Clearance - Medical physicals are required. A physical form must be completed before a student can attend practice on the very first day. Physicals are valid for 1 year (365 days). If a previous physical is still valid, they can practice. Any allergies to bee stings, asthma issues, or any other medical problems that may be an issue with running must be noted to the coach.

Meet Schedule - A meet schedule will be given out soon. The first meet is on September 7. Most meets are on a Saturdays. Runners will ride the bus to the meets.

Practice Gear - Athletes need running shorts and at-shirt. Running style shoes are needed. On days the team goes to the sports park, a filled water bottle must be brought. There is no need to buy spikes for racing. Most middle school runners will not be ready for them.

Meet Uniform - The boys' middle school team will order singlets (shirts). PE shorts or other shorts will be worn. Singlets are $20. Once bought, they are good for their entire middle school career. If they need a bigger size, the singlet will be exchanged for free.

Race Qualifications - In order to compete in a cross-country race (2 miles), athletes must be able to run a mile without stopping during practice. With heat considerations and early season lack of conditioning, athletes are allowed minimal walking at practice during August, but a pattern of lack of effort after that will result in a suspension from practice. Athletes who practice must also race whenever possible. This is a competitive sport and practice will not be used as just exercise time.

Home Meets - Parents are expected to help at all home meets on September 7th, which take place at the WFP Sports Park.

Coach - The middle school coach is Coach Nick Smith. He is also the high school boys' coach and has both teams practice together. His cell phone number is 721-7091. He is assisted by Coach Lane Thompson.

Remind - Text @wfelmsxcto 81010. Both a parent AND the runner need to be on Remind.
